locked JTAlert and Virus - Read on

WB5JJJ - George

I got this Windows Defender Alert as soon as I allowed the exclusion to my C:\Downloads folder and it persists even after I deleted the JTA installer file and rebooted the machine.

So should I wait to allow M$ to fix this or can someone outline the procedure to avoid jumping thru all the hoops to keep the file?

Laurie:  Thank you.  I have always used a desktop shortcut to JTAlert so I never looked there.

Neil: See earlier in the thread.  Laurie asked me to restart the computer and it made no difference.  Only after I wiped the SQL preferences did the program remain stable.

Smooth install no issues. I like all the changes, great work.
The only surprise was selecting the call sign to send to WSIT required a double click.
Perusing the settings I found the switch to set it back to single click.

I had to jump through a bunch of hoops to get it to download and KEEP.  Finally set an exclusion for my download folder and Windows still objected for several screens.  Finally got to the blue screen and was able to run the program anyway.  I was hoping for the new version would be more acceptable to all the virus scanners.  I only use Windows Defender on this machine.

Tnx Ron,

I didn't have time to upload to Microsoft for a per-emptive scan prior to launch.

JTAlert doesn't need to be running to access the Help files (and release notes). The installer adds shortcuts to the "HamApps JTAlert" start menu group. This has always been the case.

From my Win10 PC...

I'm going to ask the obvious, did you RESTART the computer after installation?

I seem to recall that Malwarebytes has blocked the UDP connections in the past.   You may want check if its setup to block ports.

I deleted everything in that folder and re-launched JTAlert.
So far, so good.  Running for 5 minutes as I write this.

Hi Laurie,

The download is failing a Window Defender scan.   This is on a Win10 Home, with all current updates including the latest Defender definition update.   Most likely the old AutoIt security issue (?).  I have submitted a false positive report to Micro Soft.

I have switched back to 2.16.17 & all is running normal now.

Please advise if there is other info I can send or if I have overlooked something.

You can ignore the second error (AutoIT error) that is being thrown due to the critical JTAlertV2.Manager.exe process not running. That process is automatically started by main JTAlert window, it is a background process without a window.
If JTAlert is reporting it was unable to start the Manager that indicates that it issued the startup command but the process was not found when trying to confirm correct startup.

Likely your PC protection software is interfering in the startup of JTAlertV2.Manager.exe, you may have to flag the file as safe. Note: the same named file exists with JTAlert 2.16.17, but it is in a different location and uses the older .NET Framework technology compared to the new .NET 5 runtime. The new file is located in the "PluginsX" directory which is new with 2.50.0, while the old file is in the "Plugins" (no "X") directory. I suggest flagging the directory as safe.

No you can't turn it off. Major components of JTAlert, in particular the Alerting logic and Log reads & uploads are still written in AutoIT code.

Since you're the only one reporting this with the new build out of the 750 downloads that have occurred since announcement, plus the 4+ months the Test Team has had the new code, I am left thinking that the problem is specific to your PC.

Try deleting the JTAlert config.sqlite file and starting JTAlert without one.

The JTAlert help file,  "Troubleshooting -> Setting Changes Not Remembered" discusses when the config file is located and also how to roll-back to an earlier version if needed.

If JTAlert still throws the error despite being started without a config file, my suggestion at this time is to rollback to JTAlert 2.16.17

That's the system JTAlert is currently built with -- you don't control that.

Can you describe your computer system?  CPU?  Graphics card?

Seems to happen to older/slower computers more so than newer ones.

Rebooted computer.
Launched HRD
Launched WSJT-X
Launched JTAlert
15 - 20 seconds after launching JTAlert, I go the AutoIt error.  (Same line number.)

Every launch.

Yes.

>Does it occur immediately at JTAlert startup or does it occur after some time.
No.  But so far it happens within 30 seconds of starting.  Note that WSJT-X is happily decoding during this time.

Try a PC restart.

Activate the window and hit F2 (the standard for all the new windows) to bring up the options popup.
