I am bracing myself for the question deluge, when 2.50.0 is released, from the users who don't read release notes or the prominent warnings on the download page or messages in this group or simply click through dialog windows without reading the messages presented. then complain that nothing is working and they didn't change anything!.

Laurie, this program did the trick also for my Windows 7 Prof system. FrameworkCheck.exe found no NET 5.0 Desktop Runtime on my PC and opened the Microsoft download page. I could download and successfully install the runtime.

So the information on the Microsoft page, which mentions the paid installation of the Extended Security Updates for Windows 7 as a prerequisite, seems to be wrong.

Could somebody please report if this procedure also works for Windows 7 Home?

Hello Dave,

Thanks for your input and observations.

Since I recently upgraded my 4 desktops to Optiplex 990 MT I7, I still have an Optiplex 755. 1 is running Windows 10  The others run Win 7 and on of those 3 is my "radio" computer.

I may try installing Windows 10 on the older Optiplex and then seeing what problems surface with WSJT-X and JTAlert.

John - Also running a Dell 990 (i5 2400) quad-core w/16G RAM. Runs Win 10 with no problem. Even supports two monitors without a separate video card. Been running JTAlert and WSJT-X on it for months with no trouble.

As a caveat, though, keep these two facts in mind:

1. Win 10 is near end-of-support (May 2021) for versions 1909 and lower.

2. My 990 would not accept the upgrade to take it above vers 1909, therefore leaving it about to stop receiving updates.

I've been running Win 10 on several PCs since they released the free upgrade years ago. Other than the problem with the version upgrade I've not had a single crash or BSD happen. The "End-of Support" issue means the OS will no longer receive critical security or Windows apps updates. The OS will still work and Defender will still receive antivirus data.

In general, Win 10 has been MUCH more stable than Win 7 or 8. The final decision, of course, is yours.

It would be easier if the New JTAlert included .NET 5 and installed it for you. Many Apps that require a .NET will include the .NET or check to see if you already have it installed.

A PC restart should not be needed unless there are other updates pending a restart. But, a restart wouldn't hurt, especially if it has been a few days/weeks since the PC was restarted.

FWIW, I was running with 5.0.2 of the runtime on my Ham PC, while JTAlert 2.50.0 was running I performed the runtime update to 5.0.5 (the latest), JTAlert continued to function with only a brief interruption to decoding during the time when the JTAlertV2.Manager process (which uses the .NET 5 desktop runtime) restarted. Its still functioning one hour later.

I started getting this error msg a week or so ago.  Just out of the clear blue sky.  Have not made any changes in software to the computer which is a Win 7 Pro, been working just fine.  Log4OM 2.11.0.0, WSJT 2.2.2 and of course JTAlert 2.16.17.  I'll be working stations and all of a sudden it pops up and the current and subsequent stations don't get logged.  Course i have to close the APP and then restart it but then shortly thereafter  i get the same error again.  WHOTS UP?  Reboots don't clear the problem it just keeps reoccurring.

Larry W0OGH

Is it the same error line number each time or does it vary?

How frequent are these crashes? Are they every time JTAlert is run or less often?

2.16.17 has been very stable without serious defects and is part of the reason there has not been a public update for 4 months.

While, you claim no software changes, that is very unlikely unless you're running Windows without Virus protection or non-updated protection software. Protection software is frequently updated, typically on a daily basis. Perhaps it has decided to take a dislike to JTAlert and is interfering.

You could try downgrading JTAlert to an earlier version (.16, .15 & .14 are still available at https://hamapps.com/JTAlert/)

The upcoming JTAlert 2.50.0 release requires the .NET 5 Desktop Runtime to be installed. See this previous message.

If you would like to test if your PC has the necessary runtime installed follow these steps...
  • If a suitable runtime is installed a window similar to this will be displayed.

  • If a suitable runtime is not installed a window similar to this will be displayed.

  • If after installing the runtime, executing FrameworkCheck.exe still produces the above error window, than you will not be able to use the new JTAlert 2.50.0 when released and will have to continue using the old 2.16.17 version.
