locked Fatal Error 2.16.7 Settings. All errors disappeared after installing later version, 2.16.8

Mark W2OR

Just FYI:  With v.2.16.7 having run beautifully for days now, today a Fatal Error window appeared each time I attempted to open the Settings window.  The error was apparently caused by a Windows-7 Firewall program.  Since a newer JTA version (2.16.8) was available, I downloaded/ installed 2.16.8 and the error notices ceased.  All's working well, and no further actions seem necessary at this point.  Some further details below should anyone be interested.   73 de Mark.
~~ ~~ ~~
~~ ~~ ~~
Details:  Here is a partial rendition of the original Fatal Error notice:
"Fatal Error. Following file is missing... C:ProgramFiles (x86) HamApps\JTAlert\plugins\JTAlertSettings.exe"    See below.

The notice suggested a re-configuration of the "...virus software to exclude JTAlert directories."  Here's where I always get lost. I cautiously went into Windows Firewall >> Allowed Programs, and found several listed JTA programs, some checked, some un-checked, along with options for each, including "Home/Work (Private)" and a second option for "Public".  Some of the programs listed were: Decodes (checked); Decodes (unchecked); Decodes History V3 (checked);  Decodes History V3 (unchecked); and more of the JTA directories. Not knowing anything about these options, and not wanting to make additional, inevitable errors, I was delighted to then find the new JTA version 2.16.8 available.  That's now installed and has been working well for the past hour.  As expected, the old settings were saved correctly for the new version.  And a few minor settings changes were made without incident.  Thank you, Laurie.

I see indication that 2 virus checkers say it is blocked.  I know this is a false positive.  I have tried to check Defender but it does not show any threats. How do I kill this snake.

Download is blocked.  I check Keep tab. I cannot find setup.exe.  I have checked for blocked files in Defender & Downloads. Don’t know why it does not respond to Keep.  I find no trace of downloaded.file.  I swear I will write the instruction down.

Hopefully this is a JTAlert bug :-)

Sorry Mike, not a JTAlert bug.

Try testing your script by using the "Test" button in the Settings. It populates all environment variables with dummy data, including the LoTW membership details.

I just enabled the Alert ion my live PC and emailed alerts received correctly showed the LoTW data for the Callsigns that are known members.

Herb,

Truncated audio is usually a Sound Device issue. Likely the device is being put into a power-save mode and the first sound it receives is waking it up but the first part is lost. Check your Sound driver settings and see if it has applied a power-save setting.

As a Test, perform 3 test sound operations, one after another, are all three sounds truncate or only the first played?

What sound device are you using? Is it an NVidia by any chance? If so, they are notorious for applying a power-save to the card, but not providing a user option via its driver settings to disable or adjust the setting. Only a Registry hack can provide a temporary fix, eventually being reset again. I solved this problem with my Nvidia HDMI device by changing the driver to the Microsoft High-Definition driver.

That's why I produce Release notes. A quick read and then you can decide to upgrade or not. In the current climate with recent WSJT-X changes, if you upgrade WSJT-X then likely there will be a need to update JTAlert.

What's wrong with using the Alerts menu? There is no need to open the Settings window.

OM,

Easy. Adif files are plain text, just use a text editor and copy the relevant WSJT-X qso records and paste them to the end of the JTAlert adif file. If you do this while JTAlert is running you will need to restart JTAlert.

I think you are barking up the wrong tree, Bob.

I have always used the ADIF logging with JTalert,
and I have gone through dozens of updates and NEVER
had it "blown away by the update" ...

I think you would do better to investigate WHY
your file was deleted, rather than blame JTalert ...
which has been used by hundreds of hams in the same
way you are, and have not had the problem.

surely this must have been asked for

the WSJT-X QSOs already made prior?

Laurie,

Everything WAS working well before I traveled to your website in early June to update the callsign database.

I thought “Hey, while I’m here, I’ll download the latest version of JTAlert.”

When I experienced problems thereafter, I was informed that it was WSJT-X’s fault and I needed to install THAT new version.

Instead, I retrograded JTAlert to return to my stable system. And took some criticism on and off list for doing so.

The old software worked well. 15 new states on 6 meters in the last 2 weeks.

A couple days ago,  I downloaded & installed the most recent WSJT-X and re-installed the JTAlert I had downloaded.

And still had problems.

I was then told that I needed JTAlert xx.xx.7 to replace xx.xx.6 to fix this latest problem.

So, two weeks and three downloads later, I (hopefully) have a stable system again, at least until the next “upgrade” of Windows 10.

Embedded in the above is why I don’t like upgrades. Keep in mind, you asked.

Thank you for your work.

Why the hesitation in upgrading? The upgrade had the fix for the problem you were experiencing. You statement has me somewhat confused.

Dave,
not true.   I have chosen (for various reasons, having done this stuff for many years) to use ADIF File logging

If you select "Standard ADIF File" to use for your JTAlert (JTA) log, you must give it a path and a name to use for the QSO logfile.
that path can be anything you choose.

Go to JTAlert->Settings->Logging->Standard ADIF File

every QSO that is made by WSJT-X is also logged in this file, and is read/scanned every time JTAlert is fired up for alert checking/b3/awards tracking by JTA etc.

you are correct, in that WSJT-X ALSO keeps its own QSO ADIF logfile, BUT JTA does NOT use it.
JTA creates its own ADIF logfile when the ADIF logging option is chosen.  Every QSO made is then logged there.

in this case, i have to re-create the ADIF log file from a backup that is not current (because the JTAlert installer blew the logfile away on an  update).  Since the backup file is missing about ~200  QSO's from my last backup, i'm asking how to import/read all the WSJT-X logfile INTO the JTA logfile.   otherwise, i have to manually update these ~200 QSO's.

surely this must have been asked for before, particularly when one has a pile of existing QSO's in WSJT-X and THEN installs JTA.  How do you get the JTA ADIF file up to date with all the WSJT-X QSOs already made prior?

one of the issues with the logging appl database JTA integrations i have used, is that if you DONT have the logbook appl up and running, and you make a WSJT contact (with JTA), that contact does NOT get logged.   Further, these QSO's that never made it to your logging appl db are not buffered/enqueued in a persistent manner to get posted there the next time the logging program db is seen running and are effectively lost.

in this world of terabyte disks, I ALWAYS direct software to be installed in specific directories on specific drives and NEVER let the installer do its own thing in the default winblows install directories. So the stuff "may" not be in APPDATA (although JTA does drop a pile of stuff there).

locked JTAlert updates blow away directories or files underneath the JTAlert node

bob

Edited

noticed this the last time up updated a month or so ago.
This time i forgot about it and didn't save off my logs first (me bad) and lost my logs.

i use (like many i'm sure) a custom install path for JTAlert (and almost all winblows apps).
i have always placed my adiff log directory underneath the JTAlert directory tree (I absolutely do NOT want to use the Winblows default paths, why is a different topic).

Since the last update and the one i just ran, it blows away any folder/files under JTAlert, and it just did so again, blowing away my JTAlert adiff logs.

thats not well behaved update policy, but its fast/easy for the developer ( just delete it all) having done so myself for software/installers i've written before learning this myself.   normally the industry install recommendations/standards basically sez that files and/or directories that the installer did not manage or the app "owns" should be left alone on an update/uninstall (this is why sometimes you get the dialog on an uninstall saying that not all files could be deleted... because a user may have put custom files in there).

I can live with putting the logfile path underneath the HAMAPPS tree (above the JTAlert node).  anyone know if this will ALSO get deleted/truncated by this installer ?

since the update has already run, i dont think i can test this again since the installer will recognize the update is done and not likely do the same thing.

Bottom ball on the snowman, if i put the logfile just above the JTAlert folder, will it survive the next update ??
